I just finished another book by Eric Sloane called Diary of an Early American Boy. It’s a wonderful exploration of colonial American life with gorgeous illustrations of forgotten practices and a simple, sweet narrative that kept me interested until the final page.
His books are usually targeted somewhere between children and adults and they’re perfectly enjoyable for both groups. They’re equal parts history, nature writing, and art. I wish I had the skill to draw the way he did. That’s probably why I always seem to linger in the children’s section of used bookstores to see if I can add to my collection of illustrated books by authors like Sloane, David Macaulay, Chris Van Allsburg, and Edward Gorey.
